FESS is usually performed in patients who dont respond to conventional medical management and are symptomatic
leading to a drop in the quality of life, prolonged absenteeism from work etc.
The impact of depression of the degree of satisfaction of treatment following FESS has not been studied so far.
Causes of depression in a patient with chronic sinusitis could include: 1. Persistence of disease
2. Repeated visits to doctor
3. Prolonged absenteeism from work and its consequences
4. Stress due to monetary aspects of treatment
The study authored by Jamie R. Litvack, MD, MS; Jess C. Mace, MPH; Timothy L. Smith, MD, MPH. has concluded
that depression has a vital role to play in the degree of patient satisfaction following FESS.
