Is there any link between nasal polyposis and lower airway?

RhinologyEuropean Rhinological society guidelines suggest that Chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polypi and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polpi are two different entities

because mechanisms involved are different and hence management also differs.

Gleaning various research papers published in this topic the following generalizations can safely be made.

1. Nasal polyposis affect 2-5% of general population

2. Nasal polyposis is seen in 5% of atopic asthmatics

3. Nasal polyposis is seen in 13% of non atopic asthmatics

4. Course of nasal polyposis in asthmatics are generally severe

5. Aspirin induced asthma has the highest prevalance of nasal polyposis

6. Females with nasal polyposis are more likely to be asthmatics

7. Nasal polyposis in middle age females always indicate aspirin hypersensitivity

8. Presence of nasal polypi in children indicate cystic fibrosis / immunodeficiency

Consumption of Hot Tea / Coffee reduces risk of nasal colonization of Methicillin resistant staphyloccous aureus

RhinologyIntroduction:

Infections due to Methicllin resistant staphyloccous aureus is the reason for a great number of hospital based

nosocomial infections. Because of their resistance to antibiotics they carry an increased risk of morbidity and mortality.

Studies conducted by Eric M Matheson etal has reported that the incidence of nasal carrier state is very low in persons who consume hot tea / coffee.

Sonotubometry and its role in assessing the functional integrity of eustachean tube

RhinologySonotubometry is based on the principle that sound when applied to the nasopharyngeal ostium of eustachean tube will be conducted through the eustachean tube into the middle ear when it opens.

This concept was first conceived durning the 19th century. It has undergone lot of changes like introduction of better microphones.

Politzer should be credited for the introduction of sonotubometry for analysis of eustachean tube function.

Can the presence of Biofilms be identified under routine H&E staining?

RhinologyCenters for disease control and prevention estimate that about 65% of human bacterial infectious processes involve biofilms.

Biofilm is a group of bacteria seen over surface epithelium like mucous membrane, enclosed within a matrix of extracellular

polysaccharide material. The presence of this biofilm has been implicated in the following chronic infections:

1. Chronic rhinosinusitis

2. Chronic bronchitis

3. Atrophic rhinitis

4. Lung infections following prolonged intubation

5. Urinary catheter related infections

Minimally invasive surgery in the nasal valve area to treat nasal obstruction

RhinologyMink defined nasal valve area to be the narrowest portion of the whole of the nasal cavity. He characterized this area

anatomically as a two dimensional slit like opening lying between the caudal edge of the upper lateral cartilage and the

corresponding area of the nasal septum. Deformities involving this area cause troublesome nasal stuffiness and obstruction.

Surgical procedure involving this area is fraught with dangers of stenosis in this vital area and deformities involving the contour of the nose.

This article describes what could be considered to be a simple surgical procedure that could relieve obstruction in this area.

Anosmia in elderly

RhinologyAnosmia in geriatric age group is really common. Statistically speaking about 15% of geriatric population are anosmic. Anosmia in geriatric

age group has disastrous consequences, including safety hazard. It affects the food preferences and nutritional status of the already compromised population.

The absolute odor sensitivity as well as sensitivity to suprathrehold odors decreases in aging population Introduction: Anosmia in geriatric age group is really common.

It affects the food preferences and nutritional status of the already compromised population. The absolute odor sensitivity as well as sensitivity to suprathrehold odors decreases in aging population.

Loss of smell sensation could be a component of degenerative disorders like Alzeimer's disease and Parkinson's disease which commonly affect elderly age group.

Novel way of cauterizing Little's area bleed

RhinologyMany a time we would have faced problems cauterizing a Little's area bleed. This is basically due to the use of nasal speculum

which obscures the field and also keeps one hand occupied. Bray in his " How I do it" describes how he put to use the Mallet spint.

The Negative Impact Of Depression Following Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

RhinologyDepression has a vital role to play in patient satisfaction following endoscopic sinus surgery for sinus infections.

FESS is usually performed in patients who dont respond to conventional medical management and are symptomatic

leading to a drop in the quality of life, prolonged absenteeism from work etc.

The impact of depression of the degree of satisfaction of treatment following FESS has not been studied so far.

Odisoft rhino

RhinologyOdiosoft rhino is an equipment used to measure the sound produced by nasal airflow. Measurement of nasal airflow sounds helps us to indirectly assess the presence / absence of nasal block as well as accurately identifying the site of the block. Normal nasal airflow in humans is neither laminar nor turbulent, but a mixture of both. Hence the term transitional is used to describe nasal airflow. Simple mathematical formulae cannot be used to study nasal air flow dynamics. At higer velocities of nasal airflow turbulence also increases. This turbulence creates sound which can be recorded by recording devices such as odisoft rhino.
